The CNR and ONR Short Barrel Ore Cars were constructed in 1967 by National Steel Car Ltd. to haul iron ore from the Sherman Mine at Temagami, Ontario, to the steel mills at Hamilton, Ontario.  In 1973, and again in 1975, additional cars were ordered that were 7 feet longer.  All of these cars were automatically loaded at the mine.  The small wheels located on top of the car were used to open and close the roof hatches while the car was in motion.
Both the CNR and ONR cars were pooled in unit train service for this run.  A few CNR long cars remained in service by Dofasco to haul ore within their property, while others have been converted for cement service and run in western Canada.   The ONR long cars were sold to General Electric Railcar, and are leased and in service in the north-western US.  The lettering for these leased cars is simply the original ONR Chevron paint scheme, with new NIHX reporting marks painted over the ONR ones.  CNR converted one of their short cars to be used as a scale test car.

These kits have a one piece body, and include all detail parts (less trucks and couplers) needed to build an accurate model of these unique cars.  Our decal set for the ONR long cars even includes the NIHX reporting marks for those modellers who wish to model them as such.
